Aside from covering a routine vision exam, most vision insurances, depending on the plan, give the patient a contribution for materials. Materials are defined as glasses, contacts, and sometimes contact lens evaluation. Although there are some exceptions, most insurance will contribute the benefits to either glasses or contacts. When using the benefits for glasses, there’s usually a subsidy for frames and in most cases, basic plastic uncoated lenses are covered.
With a variety of patients with different prescriptions, lifestyles, hobbies, and eye health issues, these basic contributions do not always cover all the lens options needed to maintain eye health and visual comfort.
For instance, persons with higher prescriptions benefit from lighter thinner lenses, those in front of a computer or suffering from night glare need anti-glare coating, children need shatter-resistant (polycarbonate lenses), photochromic (light to dark) lenses are helpful for people outdoors, polarized sun-wear is a must, especially for those with east-west commutes, etc. Many of the above-mentioned features may or may not be covered by vision insurance. The most important to understand is: just because it is not covered does not mean that it is not needed.
